I guess I don’t have many heroes but if you asked me to name a handful, Roman Opalka would definitely be among them. In 1965 the artist begun painting numbers, starting with 1 and going on indefinitely. It was a task that would consume him and he would never complete (he couldn’t by definition).
I find his commitment to a concept – to his belief – utterly compelling and an inspiration. To me it perfectly expresses how something as familiar, and as seemingly simple, as numbers can be so totally overwhelming.
